In an   Oct. 10, report by NBC’s Lee Cowan for Nightly News, the Owens Corning company was inaccurately said to be an example of a trend in foreign companies purchasing American firms.  In fact, Owens Corning remains a publicly traded company, listed on the NYSE and is still based in Toledo, Ohio. From the Papua New Guinea Post-Courier:

On page 7 in an article printed in the Post-Courier yesterday, it was stated in connection with a case before the National Court that the chairman of a landowner group was allegedly forced into signing a forest management agreement by an executive of a foreign logging company.
The proceeding referred to by the Post-Courier relates to the Middle Ramu Block 1 Forest Management Area, which is the subject of National Court proceeding OS (JR) No.504 of 2007 involving Timbers (PNG) Ltd and other parties.
The Post-Courier published yesterday s article on the basis of an affidavit filed in the proceeding on behalf of the plaintiffs.
The Post-Courier acknowledges that it should not have published extracts of that affidavit in circumstances where the affidavit has not yet been tendered and accepted into evidence, and where matters alleged in that affidavit have not been tested by cross-examination.
Timbers (PNG) Ltd, which is a subsidiary company of the Rimbunan Hijau (PNG) Group wishes to state that it has complied with all necessary procedures under the Forestry Act leading up to the signing of the project agreement. Furthermore Timbers (PNG) Ltd is strenuously defending the proceeding.
Timbers (PNG) Ltd also denies the allegation in yesterday s article that the landowners were not consulted by the PNG Forest Board regarding the selection of the developer.
The Post-Courier also acknowledges that the substantive issues in dispute have not yet been determined and a decision will not be handed down next Monday, as was reported.
It is expected that next Monday, the court will hand down a decision on a procedural point of law as to whether the court has the power to issue ex parte interim injunctions prior to the grant of leave for judicial review.
In relation to the correction to yesterday s article, the Post-Courier regrets any negative perceptions which may have arisen from the article.

A graph accompanying yesterday's article 'Cruel Tcard twist to hit commuters' incorrectly showed the share price of the company ERG in dollars. The price should have been in cents. Our apologies for over-exciting shareholders. Link

Allegations that won't go away

  Further to our article of 2 September 2007, Dr Simone Lester has asked us to make it clear that she has always denied the unproven allegations that she tried to hit and hurled verbal abuse at a steward after a football match, and that in a subsequent argument with police she called an officer "a poor peasant" and "worse than Jade Goody". Fuzzy numbers etc.

We said that the average carbon emission for each British flyer is 603kg and converted this to 95lb. In fact 603kg is 1329lb (Britons named world's biggest emitters of CO2 from air travel, page 15, October 10). Link

Editor's Note

An article on Sept. 15 reported on a planned auction of a piece of the Willamette meteorite that was removed by a curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City a decade ago and traded for a fragment of another rare meteorite. The article and headline said Darryl Pitt, the man who had acquired the piece to be auctioned, needed the money. The article also described Mr. Pitt as being nervous about being photographed. And it said that he was upset that the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, an American Indian group in western Oregon where the meteorite was found in 1902, had denounced the auction of the object, which they considered sacred.
The article did not adequately emphasize Mr. Pitt’s considerable experience in the handling, study and sale of meteorites, or his sensitivity to the concerns of the Grand Ronde. The article should have made clear that he was not interested merely in money but also in acquiring other extraterrestrial objects, and that his awareness of the feelings of the Indians was the reason he had been uneasy about being photographed.

Somewhat understandable

The name of Polish ambassador Piotr Ogrodzinski was misspelled yesterday. The National Post regrets the error. Link

Apology, with damages

IN this column on March 4 last under the heading Dame Duck Ministers I suggested that the political advancement within Sinn Fein of Ministers Michelle Gildernew and Catriona Ruane was ill deserved and falsely stated that they were both married to convicted IRA men, intimating that their advancement was connected to this.
Neither James Taggart nor Brian McAteer was ever a member of the IRA and I apologise to each of them for stating otherwise.
I also apologise to Michelle Gildernew and to Catriona Ruane for suggesting that their political advancement was a result of such membership, which I accept did not exist.
The Daily Mirror has agreed to pay damages and costs to both Ministers and their respective husbands.

Fun with photos

AN ARTICLE which appeared in The Daily Telegraph yesterday referred to the accompanying photograph as being of accused man Anthony Ramon Sullivan, 48.
In fact, the photograph was of the victim, Adam Guy Prochilo, 36.
The Daily Telegraph apologises to the Prochilo family for any distress caused.

Rest is fine

A front-page article on Saturday about the troubled life of Carol A. Gotbaum, a Manhattan woman who died in police custody at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, misstated the specialty of Dr. Cyril H. Wecht, who was hired by Ms. Gotbaum’s family to conduct an autopsy. (The error was repeated in some editions yesterday in an article about her funeral.) Dr. Wecht is a forensic pathologist, not a psychologist. Also, the article on Saturday gave an incorrect spelling in some editions for the school her children once attended and misspelled part of the name of Ms. Gotbaum’s former employer, a department store company, and misidentified its country of origin. The school is Rodeph Sholom, not Shalom, and the department store is the House of Fraser, not Frasier, and it is Scottish, not English. Link
