The essence of People magazine, in two corrections

In our July 16 issue, we said Fragile X syndrome is a form of retardation often accompanied by autism. Fragile X is a genetic condition that causes a range of developmental problems, including learning disabilities, mental retardation and autism. In our July 2 issue, we said Rachel Hunter's boyfriend, Jarret Stoll, is nine years her junior. He is 12 years younger than Hunter. We regret these errors.

Never been there

In "Dissenters in Uniform" (the last word, June 25) we said that Lt. Ehren Watada is the first officer to face court-martial for refusing to return to Iraq. In fact, Watada never served in Iraq, having refused deployment there. NEWSWEEK regrets the error.

US News & World Report apologizes for implying "mainstream Mormonism is a secret society, sect...cult..."

A special newsstand-only edition of our Mysteries of History series published last month makes an inadvertent reference to the Mormon faith on the cover that does not properly reflect that edition's contents. The relevant article in the issue refers to a breakaway Mormon sect, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, whose leader is awaiting trial for his alleged role in arranging marriages between his followers and underage girls.
While the article makes a distinction between that polygamous sect and mainstream Mormonism's rejection of polygamy, the reference to Mormons on the cover does not make this distinction. It was not our intention to imply that mainstream Mormonism is a secret society, sect, or cult, and we regret any offense that the reference to Mormons on the cover may have caused. -The Editors

Celebs in space

In our June 18 issue we reported that actress Victoria Principal plans to travel into space in a craft that will fly 360,000 miles above earth. The craft will travel to 360,000 feet above earth. We regret the error.

We've never seen a Sadr pun

"The Shia Fellas" by Robert Dreyfuss [June 2007] mistakenly referred to Mohammed Baqr Hakim as "Sadr I." Mohammed Baqr al-Sadr is Sadr I. Sadr but wiser, we regret the error. Link

A bit young to be governor

A letter to the editor:

In your interview with Governor Rick Perry, you state that he was born in 1980 [Texas Monthly Talks, May 2007]. You also state that he "retired" from the Air Force after serving only five years. Neither is remotely possible.

The reply:

EDITORS' NOTE: You are correct, on both counts. Perry was in fact born in 1950, and in 1977 he was honorably discharged from the Air Force, after five years of service. We regret the errors.  Link

Just gimme a heads-up

The June 11 article "The Black and White of Gay Marriage" incorrectly reported that Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) was upset because his image appeared in a series of ads promoting gay marriage without his knowledge. A spokeswoman for Webb merely said that the Senator's office had not been given a heads-up about the ads.

All, ahem, athletes look alike

From Fortune Europe:

IN THE MAY 28 table of contents, the subject of a photograph identified as the Houston Rockets basketball star Yao Ming was in fact China's Olympic gold-medal winner hurdler Liu Xiang. The photograph was taken at Madame Tussauds wax museum in Shanghai, not in Beijing.

Diagnosis: correction

  In the last issue of Independent Nurse we printed an article entitled 'Identifying stress urinary incontinence'. The article was, in fact, about overactive bladder and the headline should have reflected this. We would like to apologise for any confusion
