Because of a transmission error, a film review yesterday about “Live Free or Die Hard” misstated the critic’s description of the plot. It should have been described as “logic-defying,” not “logic-defined.” Link

Fuzzy numbers etc.

An essay in Science Times on Tuesday about the ability to encode information in a genome referred incorrectly to the number of bases, or letters, in the genetic code of a bacterium in which researchers wrote the E=mc2 formula. The bacterium’s genome has about 4.2 million bases, not 400 million. Link

Know your family

Michael Dobbs's June 23 op-ed contained incorrect information about the status of his family's passports. The writer was unaware that his older daughter had received her passport the day before the column was published. (His younger daughter received her passport on Monday.) 

Constitution 101

Supreme Court: An article in Tuesday's Section A about the court's decision on challenges to corporate-funded political ads and President Bush's faith-based initiative quoted the 1st Amendment as saying, in part: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of religion." The amendment reads: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech." Link

An article in The Arts yesterday about the restoration of the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles misstated the amount of parquet flooring in the hall. It is about 8,460 square feet, not 84,000. Link

Lessons in geography etc.

A June 25 KidsPost article incorrectly said that the novel "Half Magic" is set in England. It takes place in Toledo, Ohio. Link

Reporting was "not to their liking"

A JUNE 4, 2007, article in the Daily News Queens section headlined "Game, Set, Scratch at Tennis Club" incorrectly reported that several tennis legends backed out of a recent tournament at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills because the conditions of the courts at the club "were not to their liking."
In fact, no one specifically told the Daily News that poor court conditions were the reason for the players' cancellations.
West Side Tennis Club officials say the New York Champions Trophy Tournament was canceled "as a result of the promoter's failure to reach a financial agreement with one of the announced members of the playing field."
The officials insist that the grass courts at the West Side Tennis Club "are in excellent condition."
The News regrets the error and any misunderstanding it may have conveyed.

Context is everything

In a story Friday about political fallout from Supervisor Chris Daly's public suggestion that Mayor Gavin Newsom used cocaine, a quotation from Daly -- "My numbers are already low. Now they'll hit rock bottom" -- was presented out of context, suggesting the supervisor thought the episode would damage his standing with voters. Daly made the comment after stating that he has never tried an illicit substance and intended it as a joke that having not used illicit substances might actually make him less popular in San Francisco.

AN ARTICLE in Sunday's Daily News about Mayor Bloomberg's presidential chances used an incorrect picture of pollster John Zogby. The picture is of former Pennsylvania Education Secretary Charles Zogby. The News regrets the error.
