IN The Herald on Saturday it was stated incorrectly that Sandy Crombie, the chief executive of Standard Life, had taken delivery of a new Porsche earlier this month. This is not the case and we apologise for the error. Link

That big job site, MySpace

Correction: Because of an editing error, a Page One story yesterday incorrectly characterized the Internet site MySpace.com as a job-hunting site. It is a social networking site. Link

Mistake about mistake

In an April 19 ESPN.com story about the Vikings' Ronyell Whitaker, the headline incorrectly stated that Whitaker was mistakenly arrested for DUI. He was mistakenly arrested for careless driving. Link

One more time

An article on March 9 about a fire in a Bronx home that killed one adult and, eventually, nine children misspelled the given name of one victim, a 5-year-old boy. (The error was repeated in articles in some copies on March 10, 12, 13 and 18.) The boy was Abudubacary Magassa, not Abudubary. A reporter who visited the boy’s school in late March discovered a discrepancy in the spellings, and this correction was delayed for additional research. Link

Phyllis Diller: An article in Monday's Calendar about female comics referred to Phyllis Diller as having had "a 47-year-and-counting stand-up career." Diller retired from stand-up in 2002 after 47 years of performances. Link

Yet another (late) El Guerbouzi apology

ON February 4 as part of the article "Give Us Heist Suspect You Get Bomb Plotter", we claimed that Mohamed Karbouzi (a variation of the English spelling of Mohammed El Guerbouzi) was the alleged ringleader of the 2003 Casablanca suicide bombings and was wanted for questioning by Spanish police in connection with the 2004 Madrid train bombing.
Mohammed El Guerbouzi is a devout Muslim and family man who lives peacefully in London and has never been involved with or supported any terrorist act. We unreservedly apologise to him and his family for the distress and embarrassment caused.

This is the latest is a series of apologies to this man. We saw the first ones in June of last year.

Mr. Smith gets an apology

On August 20, 2006, The Sunday Telegraph published a report that a person identifying himself as a lawyer named Tony Smith from Queensland had caused a car salesman to be sacked from his employment after aggressive language was used in an Internet chat room.
The Sunday Telegraph wishes to make it clear that the person identifying himself as a lawyer named Tony Smith from Queensland was not the Brisbane barrister Tony Smith (Mr Smith).
The Sunday Telegraph unreservedly withdraws any suggestion that Mr Smith the barrister was in any way involved in the events reported in the story and sincerely apologises to Mr Smith and his family for the publication.

Lessons in geography etc.

Profuse apologies for the full-page map we published last week as part of our British surnames supplement, which appeared to place Dundee somewhere near Potters Bar and put Llandudno in five separate locations. The fault did not lie in the cartography, but in the key alongside the map, which listed the top 50 surnames in Britain by postcode area, whereas the map showed them by town. So, for instance, there are more Clarks in Broxbourne than any other town, but the postal area with the greatest number of Clarks is Dundee. Likewise, Williams, Hughes, Jones, Roberts and Edwards prevail in the Llandudno postal area, and in five separate towns within that area. See the correct version here. Link

Fun with photos

ON 10 March in an article concerning the imprisonment of Terry Adams, we showed a photo graph which purported to be his home. In fact the photograph that we used was not his house, but the one next door and shown below is the correct home of Mr Adams. We apologise to the owner of the adjacent property for the error. Link
