RADIO station Triple M has apologised for running a false rumour in its New Zoo breakfast show...
On August 17, the program aired a rumour from ''Barb of Unley'' that ''a high-profile politician was seen doing a little bit of shopping at Coles on Glynburn Rd . . . (and) his driver was parked in a disabled car space with the engine running''.
When Blackman asked what letter his name started with, ''Barb'' said: ''He's known for his stunts outside Parliament House such as his cash cow and gravy train.''
The victim of the false rumour, Mr Xenophon, engaged lawyers to seek a retraction.
''The thing that gives me credibility as a politician is that I have actively opposed and resisted perks such as cars, drivers and super,'' Mr Xenophon said at the time.
''I don't have a government car and I'm not entitled to a driver - it didn't happen.''
The station's apology says, in part: ''We accept completely that the rumour was false and that Nick Xenophon was not involved in any way with such a parking incident.
''Triple M apologises unreservedly for any concern or embarrassment caused to him by the broadcast.''
