An article, photo caption and chart in the Aug. 20 Sports section said Rosie Ruiz boarded a subway, soaked her shirt to make it appear she was sweating, then ran a short distance to claim victory in the 1980 Boston Marathon. She was later disqualified after officials concluded she had not run the full course. In fact, the allegations of riding the subway and soaking her shirt involved the 1979 New York City Marathon. Officials in that race disqualified her and invalidated her time after an investigation showed she was absent from videotape pictures along the end of the route and after a Manhattan woman stepped forward to say she rode with Ruiz on a subway for what would have been the last 17 miles. Ruiz has denied she cheated. Link
