Guess that means the Marines are tougher

A front-page headline in Wednesday's paper reversed who allegedly shot whom when two men battled over which of their former military services is the tougher. A Marine veteran shot an Army veteran who was visiting the hotel where the ex-Marine worked as a security guard, police said. Link

Share a name, become an accused child molester

A photo of the wrong man accompanied a story Tuesday about Nicholas Quiles, who has been accused of molesting a neighbor boy. The photo was of another man with the same last name. Here is the correct photo of Nicholas Quiles. Link

Guilt by suspicion

An article June 21 on whether fentanyl-laced heroin is sweeping the Midwest indicated that Washington County Medical Examiner Kelly McAndrews stated that the death of 28-year-old Jackson resident April Krueger was most likely from a heroin overdose. McAndrews actually stated that Krueger's death might have resulted from a heroin overdose. The article also noted that toxicology tests were pending. Since then, the toxicology tests have come back negative for both heroin and fentanyl. Link

A June 26 editorial incorrectly identified the company chaired by Wall Street investor/philanthropist Warren E. Buffett. The firm is Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Link

Murtha gets correction

This is an important correction, and Editor & Publisher has the background why. The correction:

An article in Sunday's editions misinterpreted a comment from U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., at a town hall meeting in North Miami on Saturday. In his speech, Murtha said U.S. credibility was suffering because of continued U.S. military presence in Iraq ,and the perception that the U.S. is an occupying force. Murtha was citing a recent poll, by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, that indicates a greater percentage of people in 10 of 14 foreign countries consider the U.S. in Iraq a greater danger to world peace than any threats posed by Iran or North Korea. A photo in yesterday's Post carried a caption indicating it was accused mob killer and former FBI agent Lindley DeVecchio. It was actually a photo of another FBI agent. Link

A bit South of the truth

A story on Page 4 of Sunday's "2006 Creative Writing Contest" section about Martin Palmer incorrectly stated that his great-uncle worked as a Civil War surgeon alongside Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. His great-uncle worked the Confederate front lines with Gen. Robert E. Lee. Link

Extreme global warming

Sunday's Metro Page B8 weather report may have led readers to believe global warming had assaulted Roseville with a high of 705 degrees. While it certainly was hot Saturday, that temperature was obviously incorrect. The correct high temperature was 104 degrees. Link

Someone-else's-space.com

Because of reporting and editing errors, material taken from a Myspace.com website was mistakenly attributed to George D. Kalogeropoulos in a story in Sunday's City & Region section about Kalogeropoulos's killing of his father and sister and suicide. The website cited in the story is that of another individual who is unconnected to the events described. The material should not have been published. Link

Here's how the story began:

George D. Kalogeropoulos considered himself an underachiever, but an honest one. "I don't have time to lie," the 25-year-old wrote in his profile on MySpace.com. He dreamed of having children one day, and the gallery of pictures he posted on the website show him smiling with friends and family, including two photos with his father, Demetrios .
