The Koran errors continue

A front-page article yesterday reported on an American military inquiry's finding that guards or interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba ''mishandled'' the Koran in five cases. The headline exceeded the Pentagon's characterization, saying that the investigation revealed ''harm'' to the Koran. The Pentagon did not give specifics of the mishandling, so it was not known whether a Koran was actually damaged.

Producers get no respect

An article last Sunday about the collaboration between Neil Diamond and the producer Rick Rubin misstated Mr. Rubin's history at New York University. He is a graduate, not a dropout.

Put your faith in the board

In a box accompanying a Friday front page story about Gary Gibbs' sentence for his 8th drunk driving conviction, the word "board" in Gibbs' statement was incorrectly substituted for the word "Lord". The correct sentence was: "The Lord has allowed me not only to continue in my studies but also to reach people who are hurting, lonely, lost and needing spiritual guidance."

Eurovision needs correction

A panel supporting a news report of the Eurovision Song Contest named the Danish contestant as Tomas, "the first out gay singer since 1997" (Nul points, page 5, May 21). Tomas Thordarson represented Denmark last year. This year's contestant, Jacob Sveistrup, is also gay.

Still on the Eurovision Song Contest, we referred to the French contestant Ortal and "his French rap song". Ortal is a woman (Grandma ratify my constitution, G2, page 6, May 24). The same piece gave Ireland's 1992 winning song by Linda Martin as I Am The Voice. It was Why Me? The former song (the title of which is just The Voice) was Eimear Quinn's 1996 winner, also for Ireland.

Following this inaccurate correction, The Guardian takes another kick at the can:

In correcting a misspelling of Elie Wiesel's first name yesterday, we incorrectly, and embarrassingly, spelled his second name as Weisel (page 27). Apologies.

A photo caption on Page E5 Tuesday gave the wrong name of "American Idol" finalist Carrie Underwood.

The fog of journalism

An article in the May 25 edition of The Globe and Mail wrongly stated that former U.S. defence secretary Robert McNamara advocated a nuclear strike against Cuba during the 1962 missile crisis. Mr. McNamara was not among the president's advisers who urged that option.

Take two

 Lt.-Col Pat Stogran's name was spelled incorrectly in today's Star. The former commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan was attending a ceremony at Fort Campbell, Ky., honouring four soldiers of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry killed by friendly fire in April, 2002. The Star regrets the error.

Then:

Col. Pat Stogran was promoted to full Colonel after he returned from Afghanistan. The Star regrets the error.

Nothing noble here

We once more misspelled the first name of Nobel laureate Elie Weisel as Ellie (Battle of the academics, letters, page 25, May 24). This was previously corrected on January 27.

We inadvertently used a middle name, Frederick, of Maurice Wilkins in a correction (May 24, page 25) which pointed out that he shared the 1962 Nobel price for medicine with James Watson and Francis Crick.

Not exactly a reliable source

Hy Doan, an Akron man accused of pretending to be a doctor and having sexual contact with a woman he met at a strip club, is not an employee of the University of Akron, a spokesperson said Tuesday. Doan told authorities at the time of his arrest that he was a math tutor at the university. An article in Saturday's paper stated he was employed by UA.
